PICAXE Controllers
Introduction
The 'PICAXE' range of programmable microcontrollers. The unique feature of the PICAXE system is that programs written in BASIC or Flowchart are downloaded via a direct cable link straight into the microcontroller, so no expensive programmers or erasers are required. See also the Starter Packs section for our data sheets on the PICAXE range.
The 8 pin version provides 5 i/o pins (1 analogue input). The 18 pin version provides 8 outputs and 5 inputs (3 of the inputs have analogue capabilities). The 28-pin version provides 9-17 outputs, 0-12 inputs and 0-4 separate analogue inputs. Interface your PICAXE to the real world easily for all sorts of embedded control applications.
FAQ
The PICAXE system provides several advantages over the traditional methods of programming a microcontroller (by placing the chip in a programmer). Remember you do not need an expensive programmer to use the PICAXE system!
Advantages:
The free software uses a very easy to learn BASIC language to program the microcontrollers. This enables users to quickly develop programs without getting lost in a difficult programming language. The software also has a graphical flowcharting option, so that younger users can develop programs graphically without any typing. These flowcharts can also be 'simulated' and tested on-screen. The whole download system is a single low-cost serial cable, costing under £3 each. This enables schools to equip every computer with a download cable, not generally possible when expensive programmers have to be bought. Students can also afford to buy their own cable to carry on using the system at home (the software is free). The serial download is much quicker than the time required to program a chip in a traditional programmer (approx. 10 seconds). This is of great benefit when students are developing a project as they get 'instant' results. As the PICAXE chip does not have to be removed from the board for programming, all the accidental damage (e.g. bent legs) associated with transferring the chip back and forth from a traditional programmer is totally eliminated. The PICAXE system is a 'chip' level device using modern FLASH technology, rather than an 'electronic module' as with many other BASIC based systems. This makes it much cheaper for the end user. However it is just as easy to use, and can be re-programmed over and over again! The PICAXE microcontrollers are available in four sizes - 8, 18, 28, 40 - and so can be selected as appropriate for each project. However the programming language is the same for each device. The PICAXE system is the most widely used microcontroller educational system in the UK.
